Disciple Making Movements Explained

After praying for revival and actively sharing Jesus in our little corner of the world for over 3 years now, we are seeing more and more people give their lives to Christ and we see the need to raise up disciple makers who make disciple makers. Sadly, this isn’t taught or modeled in a duplicatable way within the modern institutional church. This is why we have sought out training over the past few years and have found that training, mentorship and support through Novo.

Through this training and mentorship we have learned all about Disciple Making Movements around the world, including here in our own country. As we try to implement what we have learned here and share this with others we thought it might be good to share the basics in a blog post. So here it goes.

What is DMM?

A Disciple-Making Movement is a rapidly multiplying movement of disciples who make disciples, with the goal of seeing generations of disciples and churches reproduce organically.

• It’s based on the pattern of discipleship we see in the book of Acts.

• The heartbeat: ordinary believers empowered by the Holy Spirit reach their family, friends, and networks, rather than relying only on pastors or professional missionaries.

• Emphasis is on simple, reproducible methods of evangelism, Bible study, and discipleship that anyone can do.

Core Principles of DMM

1. Obedience-based discipleship – Focus not just on knowledge, but immediately obeying what Scripture says.

2. Discovery Bible Study (DBS) – Groups gather, read Scripture, and ask simple reproducible questions (What does it say about God? About people? What will I obey? Who can I share this with?).

3. Multiplication mindset – Every disciple is expected to become a disciple-maker, and every group can become multiple groups.

4. Focus on “persons of peace” – Like in Luke 10, finding spiritually open people who can reach their whole household/community.

5. Simple churches – Small, reproducible gatherings that multiply without needing buildings, budgets, or clergy.

6. Prayer and fasting – Spiritual dependence and intercession fuel movements.

Why DMM?

• In many regions (Africa, Asia, Middle East), DMM principles have led to thousands of house churches and multigenerational discipleship chains.

• It’s a strategy for reaching unreached people groups where traditional church planting might be too slow or difficult.

• Keeps Christ at the center while avoiding dependency on foreign funds, professional clergy, or large institutions.

Biblical Roots

• Matthew 28:18–20 – Great Commission to make disciples of all nations.

• Luke 10:1–12 – Sending out disciples two-by-two, looking for “persons of peace.”

• Acts 2:42–47 – Early believers gathering in homes, breaking bread, multiplying disciples.

• 2 Timothy 2:2 – “Entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (Generational multiplication).
