The Name Above All Names
There are moments when God speaks loudly.
And then there are moments when He whispers through something simple, unexpected, and ordinary.
I’ve learned to pay attention to the little things, the bread crumbs on the trail so to speak.
Sometimes we are called away on difficult journeys, sometimes far from home, away from our community, our support system and all the comforts of home. I was in this very situation, just trying to survive one moment at time crying out to God to help me and to carry me through.
Well, when I least expected it I found myself standing in front of a large sign that simply read JESUS. I was weary in ways that don’t always show on the outside. Carrying grief. Carrying questions. Carrying the weight of things I didn’t yet have language for.
And standing there, with no sermon, no music, no altar call, the floodgates opened and the tears came rolling down my cheeks.
Not because of where I was.
Not because of how dramatic the moment looked.
But because of His name.
Jesus.
Not as a concept.
Not as theology.
But as presence.
That day, I was reminded that the name of Jesus is not just a title we confess, it is a refuge we run to. A name that carries salvation, healing, and nearness. A name that meets us when words fail.
Recently, as I was studying Matthew 1:18–25 for Gospel Portion 8, that moment came rushing back to me.
The angel tells Joseph, “You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Before Jesus ever healed a sick body.
Before He preached a sermon.
Before the cross, the resurrection, the empty tomb.
His name was given with purpose.
Jesus.
“The Lord is salvation.”
Joseph didn’t fully understand what lay ahead. But he trusted what God revealed. He woke from the dream and obeyed. He took Mary as his wife. He stepped into a story far bigger than himself, guided by a word spoken in the quiet of the night.
And isn’t that often how God works with us?
Not always with clarity about the whole journey…
but with enough light for the next faithful step.

Today, on a snow-covered morning, I looked out my window and snapped a photo of the snow with the our yard flag planted in the cold ground.
JESUS ♥ YOU
No explanation.
No argument.
No fine print.
Just truth.
And I felt that same gentle reminder:
God is still speaking.
Still near.
Still saving.
Still with us.
Whether miles from home or in my own front yard…
Whether through Scripture or snowfall…
The name of Jesus continues to impact us.
If you’re weary today, may you remember this:
You don’t have to have it all figured out to trust Him.
You don’t have to understand the whole story to take the next step.
Sometimes, it begins with simply pausing long enough to hear His name…
and letting it do what it has always done.
Save.
Heal.
Restore.
Be with us.
