We Band of Brothers and Sisters

The quote, “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. For today, he who sheds his blood with me, shall be my brother.” is from a speech from William Shakespeare’s play, “Henry V”. In this speech, Henry V is encouraging his men to fight bravely, emphasizing their unity and brotherhood despite being outnumbered by the French forces. Additionally, the phrase is used again in Stephen Ambrose’s 1992 book “Band of Brothers”.

As I reflect on this famous quote and that even though we all come from different backgrounds, we are all “one in Christ” – “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28), and realizing that each time we set out to share the Gospel as a team, that it is a spiritual battle: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 3:12), I therefore modified the original quote to apply to our weekly sharing of the Gospel on the streets of Waxhaw to read:

“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers and sisters. For today those that share the Gospel with me, shall be my brother and sister.”
